West Springs and Area Recreation
Located in southwest Calgary, West Springs is home to some of the most sought-after indoor and outdoor recreational activities and facilities in the city. With the community being situated in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, which feature extensive wooded areas and open spaces, outdoor opportunities across all seasons abound. And due to the fact West Springs is one of the newest communities in Calgary, state-of-the-art indoor recreational facilities have recently opened up their doors or are near to doing so.
Westside Recreation Centre
The Westside Rec Centre is a multi-functional sport, leisure, and recreation facility that is under 5 km away from Encore at West Grove Estates in West Springs. Offering numerous programs, events, and activities, this premier rec centre has everything you and your family need to stay entertained and active.
Featuring a massive gym with modern exercise equipment and 432 metre running track, an aquatic park with a lazy river and waterslide, an ice hockey and leisure skating rink, climbing wall, basketball courts, fitness studios, outdoor skate park, and youth wellness centre, this facility literally has it all. Your kids won't ever want to leave. Especially if they're there for a birthday party.
More recently Westside has become well-known for its camps, with the facility offering hundreds of seasonal and summer camps for teens, youth, and those in preschool.
WinSport's Canada Olympic Park (COP)
Previously called the Paskapoo Ski Hill, Canada Olympic Park and its iconic ski jumping tower are right next door to West Springs. Owned and operated by WinSport, this year-round recreational area has numerous outdoor and indoor activities on offer. It's also home to a museum and historic memorabilia from the 1988 Winter Olympics.
In the winter you can take part in skiing and snowboarding, as well as luge and bobsled should you be feeling particularly adventurous. There are also indoor recreational classes and winter camps on offer as well. In the summer, COP shifts gear and provides adventure seekers with zip-lining and mountain bike opportunities. It also plays host to music festivals and has mini-golf. The facility also provides one of the most comprehensive summer camp programs in the city and has a superb hockey and skating school for kids of any age.
Calgary Gymnastics Centre
Located in Canada Olympic Park, the Calgary Gymnastic Centre is an elite provider of gymnastics instruction in the city. Featuring adult, child, and preschool competitive and recreational classes, the organization conducts its training in one of the most state-of-the-art gymnastic centres in all of Canada. They also host birthday parties, events, and camps.
YMCA Camp Chief Hector
This iconic Calgary summer camp is situated in the foothills of Kananaskis Country, which is only a quick trip from the community of West Springs via Highway 1.
Camp Chief Hector pretty much has it all for the outdoorsy child. Horses, archery, canoeing, campfires, and swimming pools make Camp Chief Hector the setting for innumerable summer stories across Calgary's youth and older generations. The site may also be rented out for weddings or parties.
Bike Paths, Parks, and Gardens
Numerous parks, gardens, and bike paths can be found in West Springs. If you like to walk, run, or bike then you'll be happy to hear about the nearly one kilometre of community paths that link up to over 800 km of regional pathways that are beckoning you to explore them.
You can just as easily enjoy a picnic in the community park, or take in a boot camp workout or yoga session at West Springs Park. There's also a community garden project for those with a green thumb they'd like to show off.
Canmore, Banff, and Kananaskis Areas
