2021 Design Trends You Need to Know for Your New Home

2021 brings with it a chance for optimism after a pandemic plagued 2020. One thing we're looking forward to is the design trends we expect to see for the upcoming year. Here are some of the top ones.

2020 saw a lot of us sent home from our jobs and the introduction of remote work into our lives. With most of us spending a lot more time at home, our houses suddenly became a much bigger focal point and priority.

Expect to see the effects of this in the upcoming home design trends for 2021. From functional home offices to calming meditative rooms with a Zen vibe, here are the design trends we expect to see homeowners embrace this year.

And if you are one of those lucky people who have a brand new home to decorate, use this guide to make it as trendy as it can be from the very start.

1. Multifunctional Spaces

2020 made us rethink a lot about our houses. Upon closer scrutiny, most of us realized it didn't make sense to have one room be solely dedicated to something. Especially when space is at a premium. Expect to see more creative design and storage ideas to turn dining rooms and living rooms into suitable home offices or workspaces when the occasion calls for them.

2. Plants Aplenty

The previous year saw a good portion of us return to more primal habits such as baking bread and gardening. Expect this return to the basics to continue as 2021 rolls along in the form of indoor plants. And plenty of them. Some nice indoor plants can quickly transform a space into a more calming atmosphere, and the improved air and boost to mood they bring addresses a primary complaint a lot of us had with our homes in 2020, mainly that they weren't cozy enough.m

3. Grandmillennial Gravitas

Speaking of cozy, grandmillennial styling is set to take centre stage as this demographic continues to move into new homes in the next few years. What is grandmillennial? Well, it's a modern approach to the granny-chic design that most of us remember from grandma's house. Think of beautiful florals and timeless elegance with a touch of contemporary and modern flair thrown in. On the surface, it may seem weird that this design trend is set to take off. But when you factor in the coziness it encompasses — and the lack of cozy our homes were previously providing — it makes perfect sense.

4. Let There Be Light

It's no surprise that many of us were looking for ways to create comfort and calm in our homes in 2020. That's why we expect Zen styling and decor to continue in 2021, especially when you consider the comfort it can provide. An extremely easy way you can bring more Zen to your home and make it more peaceful in the process is by maximizing the amount of natural light in it. While opening up the blinds is a good start, we expect to see more emphasis on the window treatments themself, with semi-opaque cotton curtains taking a leading role.

5. A Minimalistic Approach to the Home Office

After being relegated to the kitchen table (or worse yet, a closet), we expect many of the burgeoning remote workers to set up a legitimate home office in 2021 if they haven't already. Once space is established, the design will ensue. This design is expected to feature minimalism prominently, both in the furniture and in how work supplies can be stored. That means chairs and desks with clean lines and adequate storage areas to tuck away work items once the day is done should be quite trendy. For those with limited space in their homes, expect this minimalistic approach to the home office to be even more sought-after.

Honourable Mentions

While the five design trends above figure to be the most prominent of 2021, they are far from the only ones we expect to see this year. Here are some of the other ones we're excited to witness in new and old homes alike:

  • Hidden hardware
  • Earthy tones
  • Zen-inspired gardens or backyards
  • Abstract art and decor
  • Woven rattan furnishings
  • White and creamy-hued ceramics
  • Pops of colour
  • Walls with a bit more edge

Now that 2020 is done and dusted, it's time to look forward to all the possibilities 2021 can bring. Updating the design of your home so it's in line with the latest trends is one such possibility. So, what are you waiting for? Go grab some indoor plants and let the light in!
