5 Tips for Decluttering Your House

Remember when you first moved into your new home? How peaceful and satisfying it was to see everything so beautifully organized and minimalistic? Then came the kid toys, pet toys, random gizmos and gadgets, blankets, toiletries, and cookware to clutter everything up. Soon your new home no longer felt 'new' or felt like your hard-earned fortress of solitude.

Luckily, you can reclaim that stress-free feeling and a more minimalistic life by following our five easy decluttering tips below.

1. Begin with only five minutes a day: If decluttering is new to you, and you have a substantial amount of stuff to get through, it can feel overwhelming and daunting to start. That's why you should set aside just five minutes a day to declutter when first beginning your journey towards a minimalist life. Breaking down the project into manageable chunks like this will ward off feelings of negativity and discouragement while providing the positive reinforcement you need to stay the course.

2. Donate one item every day: Doing this simple trick will remove 365 items from your house within a single year. Find stuff you no longer need and create a list of people or organizations who could put it to better use. If donating one item a day becomes too easy, up the ante and move up to two or three items.

3. Pretend you're a first-time visitor to your own home: When we live in a space for a significant period of time, it can be easy to overlook things. Take a step back and pretend you're visiting your house for the first time and take notes on how organized everything looks and what can be changed. View your home as though it's that of a friend's or family member, and don't go easy on yourself.

4. Do the 12-12-12 challenge: Go through your house and find 12 items that can be thrown away, 12 items that can be donated, and 12 items that need to be returned to their proper place. Do this for a few days, and your home will quickly become much more organized.

5. Head into each room with four boxes: The four boxes will be labelled 'trash', 'keep', 'donate', and 'relocate'. Go into any room within your house and quickly put the items you find lying around or out of place within one of the four boxes. Don't overlook any item, no matter how small or trivial it may seem. It may take some time to tackle every room in your house, but by the end of the project, you will know exactly what you possess and what needs to be done with every item.

The First Step Is the Hardest

Decluttering your house may seem like an unwinnable task when you first look around at everything within it. But by using some of the easy tips above to get started, you will find that the project becomes less daunting and more exciting as time goes on. It's that first step on a journey that is often the hardest, and your path towards living a minimalistic life can't start until you take it.
