If you were fortunate enough to move into a new home before the initial or latest lockdowns were put in place, then you're likely already benefitting from all the additional space your newly constructed house has provided you and your family. Now it's time to put that extra space to even better use.

With new restrictions enacted a few weeks ago, you and the rest of your family are probably running out of things to do to keep active. Here are 10 easy things you all can do so every member of your house stays fit and healthy while we wait for life to return to normal.

Top 10 Things You and Your Family Can Do to Stay Active in Your New Home

By modifying some of your normal activities or adding a few new ones to your repertoire, you and your family can stay healthy and active as we ride out this second lockdown in Calgary and across Alberta. You and your family can try to do a new one each day, and who knows, you might even stick with them once the lockdown is lifted.

1. Set up your workstation on a high counter or table so you have to stand:

If you're working from home or your kids are doing online schooling, you should try to set up your computer and workstation on a counter or table that is high enough so you have to stand while working. Compared to being in an office or at school, remote work and learning don't provide as many opportunities to get up and move around. Standing while you work will fix that.

2. Do 10 push-ups, lunges, or squats every time you get a drink or send an email:

Squeezing these quick workouts in every time you go to grab a drink or hit send will start to add up very quickly. For variety's sake, try alternating between the three for a nice full-body workout.

3. Get up and walk around while doing video calls with your loved ones:

I know most of us are probably pretty sick and tired of video calls by this point but this tip can at least make your next video conference a healthy one. Mix in some squats or lunges while you're at it to get an even bigger physical boost. Maybe just warn your video call partner beforehand, so they don't think you're up to anything weird.

4. Clean your home more frequently:

Anyone who has ever vacuumed or scrubbed baseboards knows just how good a workout these household chores can be. With you and your family in the house more often, it's likely getting a bit dirtier than usual too. Take some time to divvy up the cleaning duties and kill two birds with one stone.

5. Go for some nice family walks:

If your kids are going stir crazy from being inside all the time, round them up and go for a nice family walk in your neighbourhood. They'll be able to blow off some steam and the fresh air and nature will provide everyone with a mental boost in addition to the physical one. Just be sure to bundle up!

6. Have a dance party:

Now that you have all this extra space in your new home, put it to use by having an epic dance party! Your kids will definitely dance circles around you what with the dabbing and flossing they do nowadays, but at least they'll break a sweat while doing so.

7. Get some exercises in while cooking:

If you find yourself in your beautiful brand new kitchen waiting for water to boil or the oven to heat up, sneak in a few exercises as you wait. You can either do some lunges or squats or just take a few laps around the house.

8. Do some sprints up the stairs during commercial breaks:

We know, no one has cable anymore, or if they do, then all their shows are PVRed. Don't think you're off the hook that easy though! If you're streaming something, just do the sprints once the current episode finishes and if you're watching something on PVR, do them during the commercial breaks you'd otherwise skip through.

9. Do some stretches every hour:

Take a mini-break from work or school at the top or bottom of every hour and do some quick stretches to keep limber and sharp. Your neck and back will thank you.

10. Put your phone in a different room:

Instead of always having your phone on you, put it in a room far away from where you're doing your current task or activity. That way, you'll have to get up and walk a bit to check your messages or timeline. Who knows, you might even finally understand what exactly is happening in your favourite shows.

Hopefully some of the above tips can help you and your family stay active during this latest lockdown. As mentioned before, you guys might even find yourself keeping up with them once all the restrictions have been lifted.
